“And Jesus said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…’” (Matthew 28:18-19a, ESV)
I don’t know if anyone else has felt as I, but in the past, I had a lot of difficulty with this scripture. It always felt heavy. It always made me feel ashamed at my lack of commitment to evangelism. Every time this passage was preached, the pressure heaped coals of guilt upon my head by how unfaithful I was to Jesus’ mission.
But since my youth, I’ve come to understand a better revelation of what Jesus was inferring in His Words. Our Lord’s goal wasn’t to set up some kind of evangelistic measuring rod in order to beat each other up, instead, Jesus gave us a life-giving call to live well everyday!
The word “go” in this passage is actually better translated, “as you are going.” Rather than a command that sends you to a specific time and place to fulfill a mission, this Word actually infers that giving away life, the gospel, is an action defined by much more than a preaching event or Bible Study, but is transacted everywhere we live and walk. In its simplicity, true discipleship is processed in real life and not only performed in rigidly defined academic transactions.
Let love and Word flow from the fount of your heart toward all. Allow God to speak in the small moments…at the dinner table…at a coffee meeting…while at work…everywhere you go, and you will begin to see the possibilities of discipleship in real life.
Have fun speaking life at all times!
