Morning Meditation – Into the Unknown

“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:39, ESV)

We tend to pursue what we desire to the exclusion of everything else.  If God had something better for us, we would not know it, because we would be consumed by our own aspirations.  We would be listening to our own hearts rather than the heart of God.

Isn’t it true?  “Being me” is everything in our society.  Bondage to self is replacing true freedom.  Think about it…we can’t hardly imagine anything outside of our own desired outcomes.

And yet, Jesus talks about losing our life in order to gain it.  So, when we talk about being Spirit-led, are we willing to embrace God leading us away from our current desired hopes?  Let’s embrace the truth.  When Jesus encourages us to lose our life, He’s not speaking of self-denial near as much as breaking self-rule.  Jesus is saying that the life that God ordained may be very different than what we imagined.

Now, I’m not saying that God is going to deliberately do something contrary to our desires just to be mean about, or even to test our hearts.  He really does have in mind what is best for us.  He truly does know the end from the beginning.

So, let’s do what Jesus said: give up…give in…begin living now.

Pastor, I love what you said. Self denial to me says we put something “down” for a time to let something else rise. But that thing we put down can be picked up again. But breaking rule to me says we put it “off” of us now breaking the rule of it! Positioning us under that higher rule where we truly find life.

  3. Psalm 19:21Many are the plans in a man’s heart. But it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails!
I love this but as you said and as the word says we must lose our life ( my desires and plans) and then we gain Life ( the Lord’s Purpose prevails)
Praying this today! Thank you Pastor!
