It’s my favorite movie quote of all time: “Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” Yoda had it absolutely right! The source of Sin’s power is fear. But, understand this also; before fear can take a hold, pain teaches us to be afraid.
Pain will always lead you down one of two roads. Regardless of its source, you will either choose the path of offense, or you will choose the path of trust. Offense says, “This is not fair…They are evil…It’s their fault…God is punishing me through this trial!” The offended will say anything but own responsibility for their own heart’s reactions. Ultimately, offenses will cause us to retreat from life. Trust on the other hand says, “Other’s don’t realize what they’re doing…God is for me no matter what it looks like…There’s a bigger plan…I’m on my way to fulfilling my purpose.” Trust owns its life and all its loving reactions. It always engages life.
Choose quickly. Decide today which road you will travel upon. Wandering too far down the wrong path will make it all the more difficult to back out. Don’t let pain define you. Does it exist; YES, but it is not who you are.
Jesus said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” (Mark 6:50b) Over and over again, Jesus called people out of their fear…out of their storm. Wherever you find fear; squash it! Jesus is in the boat with you, and He will get you to other side!
