Just sitting here with my dog and this thought occurs to me…
Beside me, my dog lies—still and quiet; unobtrusive to the world but very near to my soul. I can feel, with every breath she breathes, a sense of peace and certainty that her life is good. In my heart of hearts, I know that she believes that life is perfect here.
I’ve always loved my dogs and providing for them a love that nature alone cannot give. Out in the world, all Maggie would have is survival as her best friend, but under my covering, she is happy.
All of this may sound corney to you, but I don’t believe we’re much different than my dog. Next to our Lord, our intelligence is dwarfed by His eternal being, but His love profoundly draws near to us regardless of the distance in our natures. He is love and we are lovely.
Today, in this Christmas season, you may feel all kinds of things that have very little to do with being loved. But, we have this assurance that in history stands a cross, and on that cross, Jesus displayed His complete love for each one of us. We are always covered; and regardless of the battles we face, we are never alone.
Draw near to Jesus and He will draw near to you, and you will find what covering means.
